Topic: UIFN - What is it?

UIFN stands for Universal International Freephone Number

A UIFN is very similar to a domestic toll-free number, which allows a person to make a free call to the toll-free number -- typically within the same country -- for free.

A UIFN differs from a domestic toll-free number in that they work internationally. So, a caller in one country can call a UIFN number in another country for free.

A UIFN can be recognized by its country code of 800 (which is actually associated with Geneva, Switzerland!), and the fact that, no matter where the call is started, the phone number fits the format: +800.XXXX.XXXX .

The above description is a simplification. Each country has a different way of handling the '+' portion, the "International Access Code," or IAC. While many mobile phones can handle the '+' directly, most mobile phone operators will at least charge for general airtime usage during a call, even if the international call itself may be free.

Also as with domestic toll-free services, the call is only "free" to the caller. The recipient of the call (usually a company) pays for the call.
